India 2022: The Flamingos’ Road To Bronze

The Nigerian Under-17 women’s football team, Flamingos, on Sunday, beat Germany 3-2 on penalties to win bronze at the World Cup in India.

The match ended 3-3 in regulation time, leading to a penalty shootout. The penalty then ended 3-2 in Nigeria’s favour as the team took revenge for their loss against the Europeans in their opening fixture.

However, in their opening game, Nigeria lost 2-1 to Germany in their opening game.

They failed to create chances that will stir up a comeback and eventually lost the match to the Germans.

In their second group B match, they defeated their New Zealand counterpart 4-0.

Nigeria orchestrated a completely dominating performance over the Young Football Ferns.

To advance to the quarter-final, Nigeria’s Flamingos beat Chile 2-1.

Blessing Emmanuel and Bisola Mosaku scored the two goals that gave the Nigeria am edge over over Chile.

While in the fourth match, Nigerian girls beat USA on penalties in quarter-finals to book a place in the semifinals. Making it the first time the team would be reaching the last four in the competition.

Flamingoes lost to Colombia 6-5 on penalties in the semi-final, even though they started the game on a good note with couple of chances to have gone ahead but soon conceded dominance of the game to the Colombian girls who could have gone two goals ahead in the first half but thanks to the brilliance of Faith Omilana between the sticks for Nigeria.

The match went into penalties with Colombia losing their second kick and Edafe Omamuzo, who scored Nigeria’s winning kick against USA, hitting the woodwork in what could have been the decider on the day.
