The National Human Rights Commission in Nigeria says it will use publications as a tool to educate and help the world understand its work in addressing human violations.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Mr. Anthony Ojukwu (SAN), made this known while inaugurating the Editorial Advisory Board of the Nigerian National Human Rights Commission Journal in Abuja.
Mr Ojukwu noted that, the publication of Journals will help researchers all over the world understand the challenges and efforts of the commission and Nigerian government in addressing human violations.
He said, “people cannot come from Europe and America to know what is happening about human rights in Nigeria, but through scholarly articles in this journals, it gives opportunities for anybody to access our work.”
Ojukwu urged the newly inaugurated members to assist the commission in its efforts to improve human rights situation in Nigeria through the publication of quality and scholarly articles.
He said the commission has registered with the African Journal Online (AJOL), which is the world’s largest platform for scholarly journals to advance the course of the commission.
Responding, the chairman of the editorial advisory board, Justice Mary Odili (retired), charged Nigerians to express themselves in different areas of rights through their articles.
“National Human Rights Commission has over the years proved to be an outstanding institution in the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria and so partnering with them in this regard is a great privilege,” Odili said.
While emphasizing on the importance of the board, Odili said human rights affect everyone.
“It is therefore important to constantly update our knowledge on human rights issues, especially in a world where countries are judged by the level of compliance with human rights norms and standards.”
Other members of the advisory editorial board include professor Obiora Okafor, Professor Abubakar Mu’azu and Professor Jamila Nasir.
While, professor Emily Alemika, Mrs Ifeoma Nwakama among others were editors with Anthony Ojukwu, (SAN) as the editor-in-chief.
