Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University, Lafia in Nasarawa State have protested over the half payment of their salaries by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The Lecturers on Friday in Lafia, the state capital matched around the premises of the institution to insist on their demand for complete payment of their salaries.
They carried placards with inscriptions such as; “Pay Withheld Salaries Now, Adamu Adamu Has Failed, No To Pro Rata Salary, Pay Attention To Education, Restore The Dignity Of Universities,” among others.
Addressing the protesting lectures, the ASUU Chairman of the University, Mr Adam Abdullahi, said they were protesting against pro-rata salaries and wanted the government to pay them their eight month’s outstanding salaries.
According to him, the work of a Lecturer is beyond just lectures in the classroom.
“We carry out research in the library, laboratory, our homes, supervised projects, and mark scripts.
“So, the government cannot calculate our salaries based on lectures as if we are casual workers.
“We have demonstrated maturity and love for the educational development of the country by resuming back to work, so the government should do the needful to avoid a further crisis in the sector,” the ASUU Chairman added.
Mr Al-Amin Abdullahi also said that the union had declared a lecture-free day in the university on Friday because of the protest and might step up the protest if they are not paid.
