By Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka
The Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo has blamed the high rate of societal ills and vices on family negligence and lack of parental care.
Dr Soludo said Family is everything but the absence of basic values in most homes in the country, gave rise to drug abuse, cultism child abuse, domestic violence and other anomalies in the society.
She started this on Friday in Awka, the state capital to commemorate the 2023 International Day of Families, organised by the Anambra State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare.
They hosted families, disabled men and women in celebrating this year’s International Day of Families in Awka, the state capital.
“We build the society from the family, mothers are neglecting their jobs as mothers, and that is why the society is polluted with criminals, prostitutes, drug addicts, cultists and other ills.
“Parents should stop sending out their children as maids at a tender age as they also deserve to be loved and nurtured adequately,” the Governor’s wife said.
She also blamed the male folk for dodging their responsibilities in the home, reminding them that building a home is the joint effort of both parents.
Dr Soludo lauded mothers and pleaded with them to pay more attention to their families than their phones.
She also explained the importance of healthy living among families, insisting that a family that sticks to the rules of hygiene and healthy life can add positively to the growth of their immediate environment.
The Governor’s wife also used the platform to appeal to women to take part in the ongoing free cervical cancer screening and treatment exercise in Anambra State, free Rotavirus vaccination and oral cleft treatment for children.
Appreciating the members of the disability community, Mrs Ify Obinabo urged them never to feel inferior before others.
She called on Nigerians to always accommodate and support the disabled especially those that believe that there is ability in disability.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike in his address, emphasised that families must get it right by Inculcating positive characters in their members and learning to accommodate the disabled ones in their homes and the society at large without discrimination.
He appreciated women and encouraged parents to always groom their children together for a better society.
Also, the family Planning Coordinator of the Anambra Ministry of Health, Mrs Amara Ezeokenwa said that family planning is the bedrock of every family.
She encouraged parents to embrace family planning for a healthier society.
“The international day of Families aims to encourage governments, organisations and communities to develop and implement policies that support families,” Ezeokenwa said.
The WHO representative sued for peace in warring homes.
The disabled participants and families received gift items from the Governor’s wife, Dr Nonye Soludo.
