President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the immediate –past leader of the country, Muhammadu Buhari.
Tinubu praised his predecessor during his inaugural speech as the 16th democratically elected President of Nigeria.
The President stated that many thought the country would break apart but fortunately, it is still forging ahead.
He said: “Permit me to say a few words to my predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari. Mr. President, you have been an honest, patriotic leader who has done his best for the nation you love. On a more personal note, you are a worthy partner and friend. May History be kind to you.
“For many years, Nigeria’s critics have trafficked the rumour that our nation will break apart, even perish. Yet here we are. We have stumbled at times, but our resilience and diversity have kept us going.”
Former President Buhari, on Monday formally handed over the National and Defence flags of Nigeria to President Bola Tinubu, after the new leader took his oath of office, symbolizing the change from one government to another.
He later departed the venue of the presidential inauguration for his home town in Daura, Katsina state, accompanied by some members of his cabinet and personal aides.
Mr. Buhari was received by the new Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda at the Umaru Yar’adua International Airport Katsina.
From the State Capitol, he moved to Daura, where he was received by the Emir of Daura, Fafouk Umar and was treated to a civic reception by his kinsmen.
He also took time to appreciate the pilots and crew of the Presidential jet that flew him for eight years while in office.
