Eid-El-Kabir: FRSC Begins Special Operation In FCT
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced a special operation in the FCT to checkmate Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) during the Eid-El-Kabir festival.
The Sector Commander, Mr Chorrie Muta’a, said this in an interview with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja.
Safety issues
Muta’a said that the special operations was also to educate and sensitise the public on safety issues.
These, he said, include the need to avoid excessive loading, speeding dangerous driving and overtaking, as well as the need to install speed limiter, among others.
Muta’a, who said that road safety was everybody’s business said the command had deployed personnel, patrol vehicles and tow trucks to strategic areas of the FCT.
Remove any obstruction
He said that the tow trucks were on standby in case there’s need to quickly remove any obstruction on any road to avoid gridlock.
Muta’a added that ambulances had been stationed at zebra points, in case of emergency.
“People are impatient and that’s why there will always be gridlock. We intend to improve on our operations so that we can have easy movement in the FCT.
“We want to inculcate that habit into everyone so that even when no one is watching, people will still obey all the traffic rules and regulations.
“We already started the special patrol for Sallah from Monday, June 26 and it will run till July 1.
“We have done a lot of deployment so far just to be able to know that we checkmate any excesses that may come up or found on the road.
“Traffic offenses like over loading, speed violation, enforcement of speed limiter, dangerous driving and overtaking, these are very serious offences,” he said.
The Sector Commander said that use of phone while driving distract drivers and cause accidents, just like driving while drunk.
“You know festive period, many want to drink and enjoy themselves and this can affect their driving. We are going to ensure we check all these offenses.
“Another thing we will look at is driving without wipers. This is raining season and driving under the rain attract speciality. As a driver, somethings in your vehicle that must be working are wipers, good tyres and lights.
“This is necessary because the road is always slippery and tyres might be affected. People need to have their tyres changed to a better one.
“It is also important to have wipers because it is always difficult to navigate if the wipers are not working and again, the vision is not clear during raining season. One may not see the vehicle ahead.
“But if the vehicle lights are working perfectly, it will help you. So, we will educate the public on that as well, so that we will have a crash free sallah celebration,” he said.
The FRSC boss assured the motoring public of the corps commitment to ensuring that traffic were better managed and gridlock avoided during the Sallah celebrations.
