Senator Urges Muslims To Partner With Christians Against Vices In Schools
By Lateefah Ibrahim-Animashaun, Lagos
The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial district has advised the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN, and the Christian Fellowship of Nigeria to work together and eliminate vices, such as cultism, drug abuse, indecent dressing, and prostitution, among others in tertiary Institutions.
Senator Shuaib Salisu, who was also a National President of the MSSN said a few issues, such as character, code of conduct, and values were common attributes of the two religions, which makes it necessary for them to come together to eradicate the menace in the tertiary institutions.
This according to him “will foster, peace, unity, and progress in the institutions and Nigeria as a Country.”
Senator Salisu stated this during the Annual Electoral Conference of the MSSN held at the University of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
He commended the Student Loan initiative of the Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu which he said would ensure that no student is denied education on account of lack of funding.
Technology to drive
The Guest Speaker and Director, Vanguards Academy, Dr Zafaran Adeniyi spoke on the topic; ‘The Renaissance.‘
Dr. Adeniyi said; “there is a decline in morals which is an indication of the need to encourage Muslims to go back to the best path of the past and use the current technology to drive the future.”
He said renaissance implies having a sense of history and thinking ahead for contemporary solutions to problems.
“We can do better. We have done it in the past. We have to move forward and ensure that things get better. There should be massive enlightenment of Muslim youths. They are many consultants and professionals whose knowledge can be tapped to improve Nigeria. The government should first draw up their plans on what they want to do in terms of economic, spiritual, and political. Most of the politicians are humans and most of them are just going into government to satisfy themselves,” Dr. Adeniyi said.
Potentials
He said Muslims Students have better potential to lead the nation because they have imbibed the culture of self-reformation with lots of programmes going on teaching people to live as good elements of society.
“Distinguished personalities in Nigeria were products of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, MSSN. One of the most celebrated Nigerians as of today is the Chief Executive Officer of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede who passed through the MSSN,” he stated.
Dr. Adeniyi said; “Society has done enough and is now looking forward to the inputs of the Muslims and Christians who would extend the teachings of their religions to the people to better their lives.”
The outgoing President of the MSS Lagos, Dr. Miftahudeen Thanni said the theme of the event, ‘the Renaissance’ is simply revolution and renewed hope which is synonymous with the mantra of President Bola Tinubu which was to bring back old values that have helped the society function in the past.
He said; “We want everybody to go back to the root. Go back to the root of our religion, education, morality, our culture that thought us to uphold strong family values, strong societal values, and every good virtue that we can think of. That is what the Renaissance stands for.”
Represented by Mallam Mukhtar Oyetunji, the outgoing MSSN leader said the society can only be better when the right policies are put in place by the government.
