Nigerians desire competent administration as the common language of most Nigerians irrespective of tribe, tongue or religion is good governance.
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State said this at the fifth annual lecture of the Freedom Online news medium held in Lagos on Tuesday.
The governor who spoke on the theme of the event, “2023-2027: Nigerians, Elected Leaders and Expectations” noted that despite the communication challenges in the country, one common thing Nigerians understand is that the provision of basic amenities of life translates to good governance.
“All Nigerians know that when good governance is in town, poverty, unemployment, and insecurity will take flight. In their place will be economic boom, abundant empowerment opportunities, good healthcare delivery, quality and affordable education, abundant infrastructure and security of lives and property.”
Governor Uzodinma said further that a vibrant and well informed citizenry coupled with effective institutions and a vibrant media were major components of a thriving Democracy.
Restructuring of Nigeria
publisher of freedom online news and convener of the lecture, Gabriel Akin-adewo in his address called for the restructuring of the Nigerian State.
He noted that Nigeria had come of age and needs to urgently do away with the unitary system of government it inherited from the military government after over twenty years of practicing Democracy.
Whilst calling for a review of the Nigerian Constitution, Akin-adewo cited the lopsided revenue distribution formula, the absence of State Police and other salient issues as reasons why the country has failed to get to the promised Land.
Sensitive to the plight
Other speakers at the event called on elected leaders to be more sensitive to the plight of the people they claim to be representing and avoid frivolous spendings in the course of carrying out their duties and responsibilities.
The Freedom Online annual lecture provides a platform for Nigerians with diverse backgrounds to engage in objective conversations with a view to proferring solutions to the myriad of challenges facing the country and setting it on the part of progress and development so that Africa’s most populous nation can take it’s rightful place in the comity of nations.
