“Technology Has Improved Nigeria’s Electoral System,” Says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the introduction of technology-based innovation in the conduct of elections has improved the electoral system in Nigeria.
The INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this in a meeting with Civil Society Organizations on the review of the 2023 General Election in the country.

“This meeting is intended to focus more on the 2023 General Election by way of introspection, stocktaking, review and evaluation,” said the INEC chairman.

Professor Yakubu noted that the commission was able to use technology in the registration of voters, transmission of election results, nomination of candidates, party agents and accreditation of the media.

“The performance of the technology deployed for the election is part of the ongoing review of the 2023 General Election,” Mahmood stressed.

The INEC chairman remarked that the commission welcomes diverse opinions about the election insofar as their purpose is to improve the future conduct of elections in the country and expressed appreciation to to civil society organizations and development partners for their support to the commission during the elections.
Two hundred and twenty-eight (228) observation groups – both local and foreign – participated in the 2023 General Election in Nigeria, which held on the 25th of February (Presidential/ National Assembly) and the 18th of March (Gubernatorial/ State Assembly) respectively.
