The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, otherwise known as the AMVCAs, is undoubtedly the most prestigious award in the African film industry.

With its emergence into the African film landscape in 2013, the sector has witnessed positive changes and developments. At the top of these changes is the recognition and attention it has attracted from the global film community, helping to promote African cinema on an international scale and creating opportunities for collaborations and co-productions.

According to stats from the newly published AMVCA Impact Report, 68.2 percent of respondents believe that the awards have contributed to the international recognition of African films.

Its commitment to recognising and celebrating exceptional performances, outstanding productions and remarkable talents has paid off in the long run. It has become the hallmark of excellence and pride among its nominees and winners.

In its 10 years, the awards have helped raise the profile and prestige of the African film industry, encouraging more investment and support from local and international stakeholders. Winning an AMVCA award is a prestigious honour that validates the skills and expertise of African filmmakers, actors, and other industry professionals.

For a film director, “AMVCA has definitely given filmmakers something to look forward to every year. A lot of filmmakers want to be nominated at the least, it has become a bragging right to say that you are an AMVCA nominee which I would say is a good sign that the award is globally recognized across Africa and internationally.”

Every year, the awards spotlight the African film sector by showcasing the best films, talents, and productions are honoured at the event, making it a momentous occasion for all involved in Africa’s filmmaking. The ceremony is an extravagant and luxurious affair spanning days, with stars from all over Africa and other parts of the world in attendance.
