The National Association Seadogs (NAS), Pyrates Confraternity, Sahara deck (Abuja City Centre), has stressed the need for collective participation of all and sundry to build a greater and united Nigeria.
Mr Olamide Oni, Capon Sahara Deck, made this position known on Saturday in Abuja at the 2023 Feast of Barracuda of the association.
The  event featured public lecture on building a harmonious and prosperous nation, addressing the critical issues of ethnic divisions and tribalism within Nigeria’s borders.
The theme of the event is, “National reconciliation and unity: The imperative for collective action.
Oni said that the disunity that existed within Nigerians and other challenges had been of grave concern, thwarting the country’s progress and obstructing the realization of a harmonious and thriving nation.
As we assemble here, it is incumbent upon us to acknowledge the intricacy and gravity of these challenges.
“Nigeria, endowed with vast cultural diversity and multifaceted heritage, bears the potential to flourish as a united and inclusive nation.
“Nonetheless, the persistent schisms and conflicts, fueled by ethnic disparities and tribal affiliations jeopardised this very potential.
“Our objective today transcends mere acknowledgment, for we endeavour to chart tangible solutions that will guide us towards a future characterised by unity, empathy, and shared prosperity.
“This is an endeavour that demands collective participation from each individual, irrespective of background or affiliation,” he said.
He said that Nigerians must engage in
constructive dialogues, foster tolerance, and cultivate a national identity that transcended the confines of ethnicity.
Oni stated that by directly confronting those challenges, it would lay the groundwork for a stronger, more resilient Nigeria, one that embraced its diversity, cherished its rich heritage and harnessed the collective strength of its people.
He said that the capacity to overcome ethnic divisions and tribalism would undoubtly shape the country’s success in erecting a truly united and prosperous nation that stood as a beacon of hope for the upcoming generation.
According to him, together, Nigerians shall delve into the root causes of ethnic divisions and tribalism, examining their far-reaching consequences on society,  identifying practical strategies to foster national unity.
The Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr Garba Abari, noted that the theme of the event was a timely one, given the current challenges facing the nation.
Abari who was represented by Mr Patrick Chidi, Chief Communication Officer in the agency, stated that Nigeria was a country with a rich history of diversity, and that the diversity was also a source of division and conflict.
According to him, national reconciliation and unity have long been essential pillars in fostering sustainable peace, prosperity, and development within the great country.
It is only through collective action and a shared commitment to those principles that Nigeria can truly thrive as a united and progressive nation.
“In recent times, we have witnessed various challenges that have tested our unity as a people. These challenges have highlighted the urgency of embracing reconciliation and understanding as the bedrock of our coexistence.
“Today, we stand at a pivotal moment in history where we must collectively rise above our differences, be it regional, cultural, or political, and work hand in hand to build a stronger, more cohesive Nigeria.
“The Feast of Barracuda offers a unique opportunity for diverse minds to come
together, engage in meaningful dialogue, and seek common ground,” he said.
Abari said that it was through such gatherings that Nigeria could forge stronger bonds, bridge divides, and create an atmosphere of inclusivity where every Nigerian felt a sense of belonging and pride in the shared identity.
He commended NASS for taking the initiative to organise the gathering, as it demonstrated a commitment to promoting national unity and
reconciliation.
He said that NAS dedication to the noble cause serves as an inspiration to all
citizens and encouraged all to revaluate national roles as catalysts for positive change.
The event featured a panel discussion on issues that would bring about unity and development of the country.
