The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Apapa Local Council Development Area of Lagos State have collaborated to boost water supply in the Apapa area of the state.

The Chairman of the Apapa Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Idowu Senbanjo, made the disclosure during the second year in an office performance appraisal meeting in Lagos.

She said the LG would work with the NPA to further improve the provision of water for the residents.

“The issue today why we cannot pump water is because the reticulation is bad. We have not had water in Apapa for over 10 years. We are looking at rebuilding some of the reticulations with assistance from the Lagos State government and the NPA,” the chairman said.

She, however, said the partnership between the NPA and the LG had achieved some good results.

Senbanjo said the LG had also partnered with various organisations including the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, to improve the drainage system in the area.

She observed poor drainage systems as one of the challenges affecting the area.

“Last year, we spent most of our budget on cleaning up drainages, but it is not what we can handle alone because we don’t have the machinery and equipment together with the capital.

When we reached out to the state government for assistance and they came around in January to survey the environment, they found out that people had built their fences too close to the drainage system, which would make it difficult for the machinery to clean them.

Meanwhile, we are still working with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority and state governments on how best to clean them up,” she said.
