Experts task president tinubu to increase budgetary allocation on health
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has been called upon to increase budgetary allocation on health to address some problems bedeviling the sector in the country including brain drain.
The Dean Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health Science University of Abuja, Dr. Khadija Musa made the call at a ceremony to mark International Nurses week in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital with the theme, “OUR NURSES, OUR FUTURE.”
While advocating for capacity building for nurses in Nigeria, Doctor Musa advocated for government investment in the nursing profession as it formed the bulk of care.
She believes that, with an enable working environment for the health workers in Nigeria and good renumeration, brain drain in the sector will die a natural death.
“I call on our amiable President Tinubu to please increase the budget as far as health care is concerned, pay wages to encourage all of us in the health sector.”
While calling on Nurses to be patriotic for the country and work for the good of the citizenry, Doctor Musa challenged them to take the profession serious.
“The Nurses should think about what they going to do for their father land, Nigeria, they should think beyond moving out of the country (Jakpa syndrome) and remember that Nigeria has train them.”
The Permanent Secretary Federal Capital Territory Administration Mr Olusade Adesola who was represented, expressed the readiness of the administration in assisting nursing to improve health for all in the capital city.
The Chairman National Association of Nurses and Midwives FCT Council Mrs Deborah Yusuf, said, nurses play extraordinary role in shaping healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
“Nurses are not only caregivers, but also educators, innovators and leaders.”
While calling on Nigerian government to address the Brain drain syndrome, Yusuf said, nurses faces challenges in their work places.
“In these difficult times, our nurses have been frontline heroes battling pandemics, and the healthcare system crisis in Nigeria. The system remains plagued by the Jakpa syndrome.”
Also, the Former President Nigerian Labour Congress NLC Mr. Ayuba Wanna, who commended nurses contributions in the promotion of health, called on government to look into the welfare of nurses.
The International Nurses week celebration by the National Association of Nurses and Midwives NANM FCT Council is expected to end on Thursday 17 with other activities.
