Former German captain, Lothar Matthäus, has backed Nigerian striker Victor Boniface to battle Harry Kane will for the German Bundesliga top scorer award for the 2023/24 season.

Boniface and Kane recently moved to Germany from Belgium and England respectively.

While the Nigerian joined Bayer Leverkusen from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in a deal worth around €20m the Three Lions striker joined champions Bayern Munich from English Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of guaranteed fee of €100m.

Boniface has made a flying start to his Bayer Leverkusen career with three goals and one assist in as many competitive games.

The 22-year-old bagged a brace as Bayer Leverkusen trounced Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 in a Rhine derby at Borussia Park on Saturday.

Kane was also impressive in his debut game for Bayern Munich scoring a goal and registering another assist as well.

In 117 career appearances combined for Bodo/Glimt and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, Boniface was involved in 60 goals (40 goals, 20 assists) while Kane mustered 280 goals in 435 matches for Tottenham- a testament to the two strikers scoring abilities.

Speaking on Sky Deutschland, Matthäus, who captained Germany to victory in the 1990 World Cup, was full of praise for the Nigerian and added that he was confident that the 22-year-old would compete with the England striker for the top scorer award.

“You can see that he’s always looking for a goal, but also keeps seeing his teammates and serving them, like in the preparation for the first goal against Leipzig,” Lothar Matthäus praised Boniface’s qualities.

“We will see a few more goals from him. I see him fighting for the top scorer cannon with Harry Kane.”

Boniface finished as joint-top scorer alongside Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League campaign with six goals in 10 games. He was also named in the competition’s official Team of the Season alongside new team-mate Jonathan Tah.
