The National Youth Service Corps NYSC, has organised a one-day training to improve the existing relationship between the Corps Employers and Corps Members.
The Workshop was held in Abakaliki, the State Capital in Southeast Nigeria.
This was contained in address presented by the NYSC Director- General, Yusha’u Ahmed the during training which for the NYSC Southeast Nigeria.
The DG said; “I welcome you all to the NYSC 2023 Corps Employers Workshop, holding simultaneously in the Capital cities and which will later be stepped down to Zonal Offices of NYSC formations in the South-East States of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States”
“Taking into consideration the post-jubilee anniversary of the NYSC which we just celebrated, and the need to appraise and evaluate the implementations of last year’s 2022 Corps Employers Workshop, the theme of this year’s Workshop is “enhancing the wellbeing of Corps members for optimum productivity.”
“To this end, the security of Corps Members, their Welfare and the relationship between Corps Employers and Corps Members cannot be overemphasized,” he said.
The DG said this would not only ensure efficient utilisation of Corps members, but will also lead to improved productivity in their places of Primary Assignment, thereby leading to a sustained economic development of the nation.
“While Corps employers are saddled with the welfare and security of Corps members in their place of assignments, they are also expected to be interested in the Corps member’s participation in Community Development Service CDS. This is a Secondary Assignment which is compulsory for all Corps members, as it serves as the platform for contribution to the development and transformation of the host communities, hence my appeal to Corps Employers to assist the Corps members both in the provision of resources and in the mobilization of support from members of the public towards execution of projects for the benefit of the host communities,”Ahmed explained.
He said that the empowerment of Corps Members for self-reliance, self-employment and wealth creation has become a major focus of the NYSC since 2012 hence the Corps Entrepreneurship Development(SAED) training in the orientation in camps.
Security
The DG said It is important to mention here that the NYSC Management places high premium on the security of lives and property of Corps Members throughout the service year.
“Accordingly, Corps Employers are required to equally pay particular attention to the security of Corps Members posted to their organizations.’ Given the fact that they are new in the environment, Corps employers are enjoined to effectively guide them on safety,” he said.
The DG said; “This initiative by the NYSC Management was put in place as an organised health programme for all the States and FCT. It is carried out once in a quarter and involves arranging drugs and other medical equipment, with a medical team to visit a particular community in a Local Government Area. This has been working and Corps Employers are encouraged to contribute to the success of this programme in any way they can.”
He was represented in the programme by the NYSC Deputy Director Southeast Area Office SEAO, Mrs Mary Chikezie.
On her part, the NYSC State Coordinator in Ebonyi, Mrs Nasamu Olayinka said this workshop would help to bridge the communication gap, bring the necessary understanding between the Corps members and the Corps Employers, thus enhancing the cordial relationship between both parties.
Nasamu said that at 50 years, the NYSC has made tremendous mark in its contributions to the development of this great nation and are not relenting in this Post Jubilee era.
“Apart from acting as a potent instrument for national unity, it has served a better avenue for Youth reorientation and development and has also enhanced the mobility of labour across the nation,” she said.
The State Coordinator said there is no doubt that better ways of improving welfare and security of corps members, sustaining better relationship with Corps Employers and the general public would emerge as a result of this workshop.
The theme of the workshop is ‘Enhancing the Wellbeing of the Corps members for Optimal Productivity.’
