Commonwealth Seeks Promotion Of Peace, Unity In Nigeria

The Commonwealth Society of Nigeria has called for the promotion of peace, unity, and progress in the country.

This was its stand as the South East geographic zone of the Commonwealth Society got the hosting rights for this year’s National Conference held in Awka, the Anambra State capital. The theme is Renewed Hope, aimed at strengthening the peace, unity and progress that exists among Nigerians.

The General Secretary of the Commonwealth Society, Abubakar Abutu said that peace and security are prerequisites for the economic growth and development of any country.

Abutu said; “the Nigerian nation was founded on love, oneness, tolerance as well as solidarity and I hereby, urge Nigerians to embrace the dream of our forefathers.

“The aim of the conference is to inculcate the culture of peace, unity, and progress in the youth.”

The Chairman of the occasion, Agu Chiagozie called on both Nigerian and State governments, and philanthropists to initiate better plans for the youths to secure their tomorrow.

Agu commended the Commonwealth Society for fostering peace, unity, and good relationships among member nations.

Agu is also the Chairman of the Governing Board Exams and Records Faculty of Education, Enugu State University of Technology, ESUT Enugu.

A Commonwealth award winner and guest speaker Mr Cajethan Goodluck, in his lecture, called for the creation of jobs to the teeming youths.

He noted that most mercenaries for the perpetration of crises are jobless youths who ought to have been gainfully employed.

Amb. Chineke, urged Nigerians to among other things, promote dialogue and justice as means of sustaining peace and development.

“Justice and security are pre-requisites for the economic growth and development of any country. So for Nigeria to thrive, peace, unity and progress are necessities.

There is need for the civil society to rise to the challenge of educating the masses on peace initiatives, national orientation for peace and solidarity,” he explained.

Participants, mostly youths from Southeast states were in attendance at the event and the high point of the occasion was the conferment of Peace Award on the veteran Actress Patience Ozokwor, Actor Obiorah Chikezie and a Gospel Artist, Philip Michael.
