The Nigerian Senate has called for additional military divisions in Niger State, Northcentral Nigeria due to Security challenges in some parts of the state.

The call followed the adoption of a motion on the “Urgent Need for Federal Government To Deploy Troops And Other Security Apparatus To Immediately Bring An End To The Menace Of Insurgency And Terrorism In Niger State And Other Parts Of Nigeria” sponsored by Senator Musa Mohammed Sani (Niger East).

Senator Sani said despite several efforts by the government to bring an end to the problem, insecurity has continued to elude the nation.

“The Senate has passed several resolutions, set up Ad-hoc Committees on security, held national security summits and declared every support at bringing an end to the persistent insecurity in our nation, we have appropriated monies and also advances numerous steps to support our nation’s security agencies, yet insecurity has continued to elude the nation,” he said.

He said for seven years, Niger East Senatorial District of Niger State especially has come under constant and sustainable multiple deadly attacks by the terrorists, who always unleashed their horror acts on the innocent populace.

Senator Sani also said that about forty-two communities across two local government areas of Shiroro and Manya Local Governments have so far fallen under boko haram control with about 5,000 villagers already displaced in the last three days.

“They have kidnapped many and their wives seized from them and forcefully attached to Boko Haram members. Three military camps in Allawa, Bassa and Zagzaga in the two local government areas have been sacked and some security personnel killed by the insurgents in the last months of renewed attacks” he said.

After several debates on the motion by the lawmakers, the Senate directed the security agencies, especially the military, as a matter of urgency to establish permanent military divisions in the state.

The establishment of the military base according to the Senate will curtail the escalating insecurity in the areas and beyond.

The Nigerian Upper Chamber also directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, to as a matter of National emergency provide relief materials and medical support teams to the victims immediately.
