According to him, despite work’s potential to induce stress, it can be a potent ally in promoting and sustaining good mental health. This positive outcome, he explained, hinges on the implementation of various strategies and initiatives.

Speaking exclusively with newsmen, the occupational health expert noted that work extends beyond being a mere source of income, adding that it encompasses a multifaceted role in creating a supportive environment for mental well-being.

He said: “To effectively address mental health issues in the workplace, it is important to take cognisance of psychosocial risks, organisational interventions designed to target working conditions and the work environment. These interventions should involve commitment of employers, access to proactive, preventive and curative mental health care for workers and their family members by the HR, positive work climate by managers, and psychosocial risk management by HSE personnel. These interventions encompass a range of strategies, such as assessing and subsequently mitigating, modifying, or eliminating workplace factors that pose risks to mental health. Some practical examples of organisational interventions include offering flexible work arrangements, developing frameworks to address issues like harassment and workplace violence, and collaborating with Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs).”

Aigbonohan stressed the need for a holistic approach that acknowledges the complexities of the work-mental health relationship.

“This means not merely addressing surface-level issues, but delving deeper into the multifaceted parts of the work-mental health relationship to create an environment that truly supports and enhances the psychological and emotional welfare of individuals. This is expedient because self-motivated, engaged, passionate employees are the most productive asset any organisation can have. In light of these insights, I will recommend that organisations consider partnering with corporate occupational health organisations recognized for their proficiency in providing employee assistance programmes and the resources needed to support stress management and promote overall well-being among employees. Such should have a team of experts that offer tailored solutions, including workshops, training sessions, and access to valuable tools for mental health management,” he advised.
