The Anambra Truth, Justice and Peace Commission, ATJPC, is meeting security chiefs on Thursday in continuation of a public hearing of testimonies on insecurity, violence, and violence-related deaths by communities and other stakeholders.
The Chairman of the Commission Professor Chidi Odinkalu while briefing the press in Awka, the state capital on Wednesday, said the second phase of the public hearing would hold between October 26 to November 3, 2023.
He said; “It will also provide concerned members of the public who have submitted petitions to the Commission, the opportunity to testify before the Commission.”
Odinkalu, a Professor of Law and a former chairman of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission emphasised that the Commission would also engage with community Traditional rulers, town union leaderships, and market associations among others.
He also stated that “the Commission would have sessions with commanders of security agencies, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association leaders as well as special inquiries into cult-related killings in some communities.”
The Commission during the first phase of its public hearing which took place in June 2023 considered 24 petitions within 10 days of its public hearing and met with no fewer than 40 witnesses who testified on oath from 14 communities of the state.
According to the Commission Chairman, over 170 exhibits have been received by the Commission.
The ATJPC was constituted by Governor Chukwuma Soludo in June 2022 to inquire into the violent agitations and restiveness in the state and the Southeast.
