The Nigerian government says it is set to unveil a scholarship programme for youths profoundly affected by insurgent activities in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states, all in the northeastern region.
According to a statement released by Muna Onuzo-Adetona of the North East Development Commission, NEDC, the initiative tagged “Lake Chad Scholarship Programme” under its Multi-sectoral Crisis Recovery Project Additional Financing, MCRP-AF, is aimed at addressing the educational challenges faced by youth in the North East region of Nigeria due to insurgency.
The statement noted that the launch of the programme and unveiling of the scholarship portal will be held on November 14, 2023, in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city and will be attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Chairperson of the NEDC and the Country Director of the World Bank
“This programme is designed to provide financial support to graduate and postgraduate students from Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states, three regions profoundly affected by insurgent activities.
“As part of the event, we will introduce the scholarship portal—a digital platform enabling eligible candidates to submit scholarship applications conveniently.
“This portal signifies our commitment to improving access to education in the region,” noted the statement.
The statement further explained that the Northeast region, particularly Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states, has faced significant challenges due to insurgent activities, leading to disruptions in education. As such, the Lake Chad Scholarship Programme is a response to these challenges, ensuring that the youth of these states have access to higher education opportunities.
