The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo has charged all corps members to shun drug addiction, cultism, cyber crime, substance abuse, kidnapping and other vices.
Governor Soludo who made the statement while declaring open the 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream one Orientation Course for corps members posted to Anambra state held at the NYSC permanent Orientation Camp, Umuawulu/Mbaukwu in Awka South Local Government Area of the state said, “These vices rather than promote the individual and the society, they degrade the society and equally have devastating effects on those who engage in such acts.”
Governor Soludo, represented by his Chief of staff, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi, disclosed that the state government is set to launch a coding skill training tagged “Code Anambra” programme in two weeks.
He urged corps members who are not good in coding and ICT skills to tap into the opportunity.
The Governor called on law enforcement agents, traditional, and religious leaders and town unions to join hands in the campaigns to stamp out the vices in the society.
He acknowledged the immense contributions of the scheme to the development of society, particularly in the areas of education, health, agriculture and rural infrastructure, Governor Soludo pledged continued support to the activities of the scheme in the state.
“To the state coordinator and all camp officials, I have confidence in your commitment to ensuring the value reorientation and character mould of these patriots towards a transformation that will in turn impact greatly on national development.”
The Chairman NYSC Governing Board Anambra state who is also the state Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Patrick Agha Mba, while welcoming the prospective Corps Members to the the state, acquainted them with some of the things Anambra is made up of and known for, including cultures and traditions of the Igbos.
He advised them to be completely immersed in the NYSC skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development through the in-camp and post-camp training so as to acquire the rudimentary skills that will assist them to be independent after the service year.
Earlier in her speech, the state coordinator, NYSC, Mrs Blessing Ekene Iruma stated that a total of 1,500 prospective corps members, comprising 714 males and 786 females were registered and had quickly adjusted to the new camp environment and participated actively in camp activities.
“As you are aware, the national focus for the youth appears to be on the acquisition of skills, owing to the scarcity of white collar jobs so, the NYSC has risen to the occasion by the introduction of Skills Entrepreneurship Development Programme (SAED). It is, therefore, expected that every prospective corps member would acquire a skill during the nine days of SAED sensitization, lectures and hands-on training.“
