Biotechnology: Agency Tasks Media Professionals on Objective Reportage
Media professionals in Nigeria have been urged to persistently showcase the strides in agricultural biotechnology, emphasizing sustainable practices and potential benefits, and fostering informed discussions worldwide.
The Director General and Chief Executive officer of the National Biotechnology Development Agency NABDA, Prof Abdullahi Mustapha stated this during the 2023 edition of Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa, OFAB Media Awards in Abuja with the theme: Building a Sustainable Legacy for Media Practitioners.
The NABDA DG said that Biotechnology has emerged as a beacon of hope in the field of agriculture, offering innovative solutions to pressing challenges such as climate change-induced stresses to the need for increased food production to feed a growing global population adding that the science of biotechnology has proven tools and techniques to navigate around the complex issues.
“I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for the dedication and hard work of you journalists, media professionals, and communicators who tirelessly explore the realm of agricultural biotechnology. Your role in disseminating accurate, unbiased, and evidence-based information is essential. You help to counter misinformation and ensure that the public discourse surrounding biotechnology is well-informed and constructive,” he added.
Prof Mustapha urged media professionals to continue their collaborative efforts in supporting and advancing agricultural biotechnology for the betterment of humanity.
“By embracing the responsible use of biotechnology, we can navigate the challenges of the future and ensure food security, environmental sustainability, and improved livelihoods for all,” he added
“The OFAB Media Award serves as a testament to the importance of responsible journalism and media communication in this critical field. It recognizes those who have excelled in their efforts to convey the benefits of biotechnology and at the same time take into cognizance ethical considerations associated with the technology. Your work contributes to fostering dialogue, promoting innovation, and advancing policies that support sustainable agriculture and food security,” he further stated.
Appreciation
Speaking, the Director of, the Department of Agriculture Biotechnology, National Biotechnology Development Agency, NABDA, Dr Rose Gidado acknowledged the efforts of journalists and media professionals as well as expressed appreciation for their unwavering support and commitment to fostering a conducive environment for informed dialogue on agricultural biotechnology.
“It is through media storytelling that we can bridge the gap between the science of biotechnology and the broader public, helping them make informed decisions and understand the potential benefits it holds for our society.
Over the years, we have witnessed countless stories and reports that have not only enlightened us but have also sparked meaningful conversations and driven policy changes. These efforts have had a profound impact on the agricultural landscape, improving the lives of farmers, increasing crop yields, and contributing to the overall well-being of our communities,” She said.
Also speaking, the former special adviser to former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina emphasized the importance of media practitioners maintaining objectivity in their reporting, particularly when covering topics such as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
He stressed the need for balanced and unbiased coverage, ensuring that information is presented fairly to foster a more informed and nuanced public discourse on GMOs.
