The Sokoto State Government has commenced the distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and antimalarial drugs to internally displaced persons’ (IDPs) camps in the state. This is in addition to a fumigation exercise.
The state’s Deputy Governor Idris Gobir inaugurated the distribution at Ramin Kura IDPs’ camp in Sokoto North local government area of Sokoto State on Saturday.
Mr Gobir urged residents of the IDPs’ camp to consider the condition as destiny, stressing that the present administration had put in place proactive measures to ensure that they return to their respective settlements and engage in normal livelihood.
“Governor Ahmad Aliyu’s administration has been committed to improving the citizens’ wellbeing in all sectors, the reason why it initiated a 9-point agenda, that comprised provision of standard healthcare, education and others,” Gobir said.
According to him, the measure is targeted at reversing the neglected conditions of people and the environment.
While presenting 30 bags of rice and maize to residents of the IDPs’ camp, Gobir reassured them of the government’s continuous support to the less privileged and other vulnerable persons across the state.
The State Commissioner for Health, Hajia Asabe Balarabe, said the initiative was aimed at ensuring that IDPs were considered in all government activities and feel a sense of belonging in the community.
She said the state government had lined up activities to safeguard people’s lives, especially against dengue fever, which shared some symptoms with malaria.
The commissioner commended community groups, donor agencies and government institutions for their support.
Earlier, the Special Adviser to State Governor Aliyu on Malaria Control Agency, Alhaji Namadina Ibrahim, said the insecticide-treated nets, along with other medications, were being distributed free and urged beneficiaries to utilize the items effectively.
For his part, the House Committee Chairman on Healthcare in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Dauda, commended the government’s initiative of reaching out to the IDPs and assured them of legislative support at all times.
