The governor gave the commendation during the closing ceremony of their orientation course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Old Macgregor College, Afikpo North local government area of the state.
“I am pleased to be with you today to preside over this ceremony, which marks the end of the orientation course for the 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream ‘1’ corps members deployed to Ebonyi State.
“I encouraged you earlier during the swearing-in ceremony to take the camp activities very serious.
“I am pleased with the report of your disciplined conduct and enthusiastic participation in all the camp activities.
“You have proved that you have internalized the ideals of the NYSC scheme and are prepared to pursue their attainment wherever you may be posted to serve.
“While on camp, you must have observed that the NYSC orientation course reflects a true state of Nigeria, and it is an important platform for promoting national unity and integration.
“It becomes my conviction, therefore, that your initial apprehension and prejudices will disappear for a better understanding of the diverse cultures and ethnic inclinations of our great country and the reason why we shall remain one united Nigeria despite all odds,” said Governor Nwifuru.
He assured them of adequate security, welfare, and support throughout their service year. He promised that the state would also continue to uphold the gesture of appreciating and rewarding outstanding corps member.
For her part, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Foluke Oladeinde, narrated how barely 3 weeks ago the corps members arrived in Ebonyi State in response to the clarion call and were registered for the national service.
While undertaking the orientation course, the corps members were taken through a series of activities, such as para-military drills, citizenship and leadership trainings, skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development trainings, lectures, security tips, cultural and language studies, amongst others.
“This set of corps members has been exceptional in carrying out their assigned duties.
“They displayed a great sense of oneness, diligence, discipline and dedication to duty.
“This remarkable bonding, existing among them, is a clear indication that the scheme is achieving its objectives of developing common ties among the youths, promoting national unity and integration,” the NYSC state coordinator observed.
She expressed heartfelt gratitude to the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru for its numerous supports, which contributed to the overall success of the camping exercise.
‘To our collaborating agencies: the Army, the Police, Civil Defence, NDLEA, Fire Service, DSS, Man-o-War, the Legion, Red Cross, amongst others, we are very happy with you for the good work and sacrifices you made for the success of this orientation course.
“I wish to commend, in a very special way, the likes of the camp director, assistant directors, heads of assignments, and indeed all camp officials for your dedication to duty,” Oladeinde said.
She further advised the corps members to be accepting of the people of their host communities as they begin their primary assignments:
“Today, as you leave the camp to your various places of primary assignment, I admonish you to be law-abiding, accommodating, diligent, and accept the people of your host community.”

A Brief History of the NYSC Scheme

The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil War. The purpose of the scheme is primarily to inculcate in Nigerian youths the spirit of selfless service to the community, and to emphasize the spirit of oneness and brotherhood of all Nigerians, irrespective of cultural or social background.

Nigerian youths, upon completion of tertiary education, are enrolled in this compulsory one-year scheme.
