Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris has called on the National Assembly to look into some outdated Laws and Legislations that are now impediments to the Agencies and Parastatals under his Ministry.

Speaking during an interactive session with the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation on Wednesday in Abuja, Mr. Idris said those Laws and Legislations were enacted since the establishment of these Agencies many years ago and therefore needed to be reviewed to enable them to function well.

Some Agencies under the Ministry includes the Nigeria Broadcasting Organization, NBC, National Orientation Agency, NOA, Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, Voice of Nigeria, VON, News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Federal Radio Corporation Nigeria, FRCN, etc.

He said some of these Agencies and Parastatals were unable to compete with their contemporaries because of these Acts that established them therefore solicited the help of the Legislature to look into the enabling Acts that established and work on the legal framework that would make them work effectively.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Emeka Eze told the Minister to live up to their responsibilities of shouldering the renewed hope of the present government agenda to bring purposeful governance to the people.

Senator Eze also advised the Agencies under the Ministry to think above the board and look for more alternatives to generate funds for them to meet some of their challenges.

The interactive session is between the Federal Ministry and the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, which is saddled with overseeing its activities.
