Substandard Telecom Gadgets: “Ensure devices are type-approved before purchase”- NCC

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged Nigerians to ensure that mobile devices, particularly handset models, are type-approved by the NCC before purchase.
According to Engr Bako Wakil, the Director, Technical Standards and Network Integrity, NCC, the approval process is to ensure that the proliferation of substandard and fake devices are not actually allowed in the industry.
“If telecom devices are not produced according to the standards, they might actually bring some challenges to the users themselves: they probably will radiate more than they are supposed to radiate, thereby harming the person.
“Another thing, they also introduce noise and interference into the network so sometimes you’ll be complaining of bad network, whereas the handset you’re using is not genuine or a good one and also contributing to the bad quality of service.
“Why we always appeal to people to check the NCC website is because we have the list of the model number of all the type-approved devices. Whether they are mobile handsets, tablets or laptop computers, any device(s) that is going to be connected to the national network ought to have been type-approved by the Commission.
“And by that we ensure that they have been produced according to the standards that they were made to operate,” Engr Wakil said.
