Edo state Film Festival committee selects 486 films
The Edo State International Film Festival Committee has announced the selection of 486 films for its second edition, scheduled to take place in Benin City, from November 30 to December 2, 2023. The committee received over 3000 entries from filmmakers representing more than 80 countries.
Expressing excitement about the upcoming event, the festival’s director, Violet Okosun, said, “ESIFF continues to be a beacon for filmmakers globally, and this year’s selection of 486 films from over 80 countries, including Iran, India, United States of America, and United Kingdom, underscores the festival’s commitment to showcasing the diverse tapestry of global cinema. We are thrilled to provide a platform that not only celebrates outstanding films but also fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas and skills within the industry.
In addition to the film screenings, the festival will offer a series of master classes and panel sessions to enrich the experience for both emerging and established industry professionals. It added that the expert-led master classes will dwell on cinematography, screenwriting, the business of acting, and documentary filmmaking, among others.
The panel sessions will also feature key government officials, including the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki; the state’s Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism, Uyi Odua Malaka; as well as prominent film executives, such as the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Rok Studios, Mary Njoku; Chairman of Genesis Group, Nnaeto Orazulike; and Managing Director of Kada Cinemas, Trevor Pillay.
The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, expressed his enthusiasm for the festival and the burgeoning film industry in the state. He reiterated the government’s commitment to developing the region as a hub for film production, emphasising infrastructure development and talent cultivation. He said, “The strategy is to make sure we develop Edo as a hub for production by making it easy for producers to come and work here.”
The statement added that the festival 2023 would offer attendees an unforgettable experience, powered by the Victor Uwaifo creative hub, and bringing together filmmakers and other industry professionals.
