In the spirit of the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebration, a  non-governmental organization (NGO), the Universal Outreach for Women Empowerment Initiative (UNOWEMI), has given succour to over one hundred (100) widows and indigents in Ebonyi State, Southeast Nigeria.
The NGO, in collaboration with the World Mission Foundation of United States of America and the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), has been doing this over the years to ensure that women and indigents in the state are taken care of.
The Chief Executive Officer of the NGO, Evangelist Abigail Ezeiheukwumere, disclosed this to journalists during the end-of-year empowerment programme for widows and indigents held at the Universal Christ Ministry of All Nations in Abakaliki, the State Capital.
The CEO said, “the essence of this Universal Outreach for Women Empowerment Initiative is to make women happy and also to empower the indigents so that they will be happy like every other person in the state.
“It was conceived to also fulfill the scripture where it has directed us to take care of the widows and the poor.”
The Chairman, Ebonyi State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Dr. Scamb Nwokolo, who is also the president of the NGO, expressed satisfaction with the programme:
“It gives us joy to put smiles on the faces of people, especially this group of people that you are seeing here today.
As you can see, these women don’t have anybody who can take care of them because they are widows. We are also empowering the indigents as well.”
Earlier, Pastor Mirabel Imumolen during her sermon advised the widows and the indigents to put total trust in God as their source of livelihood. She further urged the widows to avoid sin.
The chairperson of the widows, Mrs Blessing Ofobuike, expressed appreciation to the NGO for the gesture.
“My prayer is that God should continue to prosper the NGO so that they can put smiles on people’s faces,” Ofobuike added.
