The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) Anambra State chapter, has elected new executive officers in Amawbia Awka.
In a transparent election where almost all the positions were unopposed and affirmed by voice vote, the NRCS elected the first female Chairman, Professor Charity Ifeyinwa Emelie ,a lecturer at the law faculty of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University(COOU) Igbariam, Anambra State
The election which took place at the Red Cross office saw the exit of the former chairman of the Anambra State Red Cross, Professor Peter Onyekachi, after leading the state branch for several years.
The new executives are: Ezedigbo Chika Anthony, branch vice chairman, Ifeoma Justina Okonkwo,legal adviser,Chizoba Orgu, branch development, Sister Dr. Chrysantus Onwurah, branch health and care, Jude Emeka Ejiogu, finance resource and mobilisation.
Others are: Chigbue Ruth Chinasa, communication and advocacy,Obodo Chukwunonso Ferdinand,youth gender and volunteer,Ilozor Charles Ike, disaster management, Ossai Scholastica Ngozika, finance resource and property management, Okpala Uchenna, capacity development and Okechukwu Avusioke, programme planning.
Presenting her acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Prof Charity Ifeanyiwa Emelie said, “I am ably ready, ably qualified and capable.My first major step is to create awareness and be transparent,then other things will fall in line.”
Professor Emelie promised to strictly observe the seven fundamental principles of Red Cross which are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.
She equally urged other new officials to follow suit and work as a team.
On handling disaster which she said creates emergency, Emelie said she will harness the available resources and work with the director on emergency.
Muazu Mohammed Dikwa,the national legal adviser of NRCS and the chairman election and transition committee from national headquarters for Anambra State election 2023, after inducting the new executive into office, advised them to carry every member along and adhere to the rules and regulations of the red cross society so as to achieve a worthy branch.
“Anambra branch is a very vibrant branch, if the exco can come together and achieve what they want to achieve, definitely, there will be success in the branch.”
For his part, the red cross national branch development adviser and director of news, Ebonyi State Broadcasting Corporation, Chief Emmanuel Nworie, who spoke about some members who walked out during election said, “Those of them that walked out did not renew their membership for up to 5years, some 3years,so it is not allowed in the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS).NRCS is a disciplined international humanitarian organisation.”
Advising the executives Nworie said, “The strength of the Nigerian Red Cross are the branches and the strength of the branches are the divisions.
“They have to strengthen the divisions, they have to strengthen their branches.”
He also called for more membership.
“If you have more membership, you generate more fund, you have more people and it creates more visibility.”
The 2023 Anambra branch election which was tagged, “Renewing Our Commitment To The Fundamental Principles,” was conducted in a voice vote affirmation, after screening out 12 out of the 24 candidates.
The new executives were inducted during their Annual General Meeting (AGM).
