American gymnast Simone Biles was named the Associated Press (AP) Female Athlete of the Year for a third time, following a thrilling return to gymnastics in 2023.

Following her shock withdrawal at the Tokyo Olympics, Biles completed her comeback over the summer, competing in her first gymnastics competition after two years.

At the end of August 2023, she became a national champion again. By October, she was a world champion again.

Biles was up against formidable athletes for the AP Female Athlete of the Year title. Just behind her were Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark and Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati, after her heroics to claim the FIFA Women’s World Cup crown with Spain.

Votes were cast by a panel of sports media professionals, with Biles recording four (4) more votes than her closest competitor.

A record eighth US national championship and a sixth world all-around gold, ensured Biles became the sixth woman to claim the AP honour for a third time.

Biles previously won the AP honour in 2016 and 2019. 2023 completed the treble of awards on her triumphant return to gymnastics.
