3rd Ibadan Basketball Championship kicks off

The 3rd edition of the Ibadan Basketball Championships on Friday tipped off with eight male teams and four female teams at the Basketball court of the Lekan Salami Stadium.

The participating clubs include Hoop Dreams Nigeria, Liberty Spears, University of Ibadan Club, TTP Club, Showtyme Hoopers, Lion Club, Rising Stars and the Polytechnic of Ibadan Club.

The female clubs are the Polytechnic Ibadan Club, Rising Star Club, Hoop Dreams Club, and Value Exchange Club.

The second edition of the Championship was won by Hoop Dreams, after defeating Showtyme Hoopers in the final match.

One of the conveners, Sola Durojaye said the aim of the annual grassroots basketball competition is to discover and develop the sport in Oyo State.

As a young basketball player growing up in Ibadan, we had little or no competition to test our strength; but now that we are retired and away from the country, we thought of giving back to the community that made us by coming back here to organize this annual competition, with the aim of discovering talents and developing them.

`This is the third edition and we hope to make it bigger,” he said.

He also confirmed that in the male category, the winner will get N200,000, second N100,000 while the third gets N50, 0000. In the female category, the winner gets N100,000, second place N50,000 while the third gets N30,000.
