Lagos State government has restated its commitment to upscale the school feeding programmes in public schools to boost pupil’s welfare, improve attendance and reduce the menace of out of school children.
This comes as schools resumes for the second term of the year 2023/2024 session.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun gave this indication when he visited some schools in Lagos to monitor students and pupils resumption for the second term of Y2023/2024 school session.
He urged teaching, non-teaching staff, students and pupils in the state to make year 2024 counts for excellent performance in their various teaching and learning deliveries.
In what seems like a new year message to education stakeholders in primary and secondary schools across the State, Alli-Balogun articulated the wish of the State government to ensure that the limited resources of the state are deployed to ensure the safety of students, pupils and school personnel in the new year.
The Commissioner also announced the recruitment of new teachers across various subject and classes which is expected to further improve the capacity of students to learn more under qualified teachers.
He said “many of our students, pupils and teachers made us proud in 2023 individually or as representatives of various schools, this naturally encourages the State government to do more. The State Government is also pleased with the level of support for interventions, collaboration, and initiatives in the education sector. It is expected that all stakeholders will aim higher for a better performance in the second term of the 2023/24 school session.
“The quest to improve employability of youths in Lagos State will also be boosted in Y2024 with more intervention in the area of vocational and skills acquisitions.”
During the visit, the Commissioner admonished students to stay off drugs, shun cultism, avoid gang wars and examination malpractices, stressing that the energy for such vices can be diverted to various co-curricular activities encouraged in schools and sometimes supported by various non-governmental organisations.
The Commissioner further assured education stakeholders that the Lagos State government will continue to motivate school personnel with improved welfare, prompt payment of staff salaries and top-notch capacity development.
He further reiterated the necessity for parents and guardians to pay tax as at when due for the benefits of common goods. And that LASRRA registration and tax certificate shall be the condition for the registration of both junior and senior secondary schools certificate examinations in the State.
Mr. Alli-Balogun assured all stakeholders that the state will collaborate to create hope for future leaders by pioneering transformative solutions to Education Governance in Lagos State.
Some of the schools visited by the Commissioner and his team were District Junior College, Sango Junior Secondary School, Sango Senior Secondary School among others.
