Residents of the Northern Commercial city of Kano have engaged in various forms of celebrations on the Supreme Court judgement which affirmed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as the duly elected governor on the platform of New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP.

Men, women and children have taken to the streets to celebrate the Supreme Court verdict across the metropolis chanting solidarity songs and displaying posters of Governor Yusuf as well as the  party insignia.
Speaking to voice of Nigeria, some residents expressed gratitude with the decision of the Supreme Court saying it had averted a violent reaction by the public.
According to them, the Apex Court has given back the mandate of the people to them which reflected in the peaceful celebrations.
Opening their shops
At the market places that were initially closed in the early hours of the day, like the Rimi and Kantin Kwari markets, people have spontaneously started opening their shops and other places of business.
The Police Command had earlier issued a warning against any wild celebrations that would lead to loss of lives and property.
However, the uneasy calm earlier reported in Kano by the media had automatically switched to celebrations in the streets.
Meanwhile, security has been biffed up along all routs while others are patrolling the city.
The Supreme Court in Abuja had affirmed Yusuf Abba Kabiru of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) as the duly elected governor of Kano and dismissed the petition instituted against him by the All Progressives Congress APC and its governorship candidate, Nasir Yusuf Gawuna.
The Apex Court on Friday reversed the judgments of the Court of Appeal and the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which nullified the election of the governor on miscarriage of justice.
Justice John Inyang Okoro who delivered the lead judgment held that the law and natural justice were turned upside down by the two courts below to arrive at the unjust and unfair decision.
