The Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria has released the timetable of the party’s activities for the 2024 gubernatorial election in Edo State Southern Nigeria.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Obiora Ifoh, revealed that the party’s National Working Committee, (NWC) has approved the commencement of the sale and submission of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
The selling of the forms according to the party’s timetable is to commence between January 25 and February 11, 2023.
He stated that female aspirants have been exempted from paying for the Expression of Interest Form and that the decision was taken at the NWC meeting held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on Wednesday.
He further stated that the party has pegged the cost of obtaining its Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the 2024 Edo off-cycle Governorship Election at thirty million Naira.
The statement stated, “Interested aspirants are to pay five million naira for the expression of interest form and twenty-five million only for the nomination form for the election scheduled to be held in September this year”.
Mr Ifoh who further said interested aspirant must be a Nigerian and an indigene or resident of Edo State mentioned that the NWC has also approved an Indirect Primary election wherein ward and local government congresses ahall hold to elect the flag bearer.
The National Publicity Secretary added that the “NWC has also set aside February 14, 2024, for screening and February 22 for primary election while 23rd of February is for resolution of dispute or appeal arising from the primaries.”
The party commended the country’s electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the leadership of the party for complying with INEC’s rules and regulations.
Vote of Confidence
The NWC also passed a Vote of Confidence on the National Chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure for piloting the affairs of the party and giving it a proper direction.
The Mr Ifoh stated that “the NWC noted the milestone the party achieved in the recently concluded general election where it won as many as one governorship, 7 Senate, 34 House of Representatives and numerous States House of Assembly seats.”
However, Ifoh expressed regret that the number of seats won were depleted following several disappointing court judgements.
He maintained that “the party remains optimistic that many more seats will be won in the coming days as a result of rerun elections in some states”.
He said, “The NWC also pledged its loyalty to the national leader and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi for his commitment to the party in spite of the electoral robbery witnessed in the country recently.”
