A non Governmental Organisation, known as the Political Awareness Group has called on Nigeria politicians to prioritise the well-being of Nigerians than their personal goals.

The National Chairman of the Group, Abdul-Waheed Abdul-Ganiyee made the appeal during a three day maiden National Conference of the political group held in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Abdul-Ganiyee noted that National interest should be the priority of any politician for the development of the nation’s Economy, Health sector,  Educational system and security challenges amongst other critical issues that Nigeria was encountering.

We are an Awareness group that focuses on providing and offering possible solutions to the growth of democracy in Nigeria according to the guidance of Islamic Teaching.

“The essence of this conference is to enhance quality decision making processes and equitable representation in Governmental institutions in our country Nigeria. As the citizen of the Country we do asses that are we getting it right, if yes then the government had it keep it up, but if the government fails in some areas where we think is very important then we the citizens we called on the government to address the challenge,” he said.

While delivering her lectures with the theme “The Representation and Participation of Muslims in Nigerian Institutions and Quality Decision Making Process” Professor Ganiyat Uthman, Former Dean Faculty of Social Science National Open University Abuja said Nigerian politicians forget that they are the ambassadors of the masses and good representation is expected of them.

“As Muslims I think where we have gotten it wrong is that  forget that we are the Vicegerent of God on earth and as Ambassadors of God we need to abide by the  rules and regulations of the  Holy Qur’an injunctions that guide societal transformations, that guide living together with those who are not Muslims, those from other  tribes  for peaceful co-existence and standing for justice.

At any level of governance be Natioal, State or Local we need to ensure that we are not electing, appointed or selecting based on religion, tribe or sentiments,  if you look at  Malesia’s Political system they don’t tolerate religion or tribal sentiments in appointing or electing their leaders as long as they  have confidence on for moving the country forward you qualifies.

However in Nigeria is contrary to that, we allowed religion, ethnicity  and corruption destroying the growth of our democracy while non of Islam or Christianity religious permits unfairness, injustice and misappropriationof national wealth, its time to drop all these issues that always draw us back and  to face the reality for growth of our beloved nation,” she said.

In his keynote address, Sheik Nura Khalid said Nigerian political systems need to be overhaul and do eradicate all the challenges affecting the growth of democracy in Nigeria.

It’s only in Nigeria that we celebrate people who we know are Corrupt, the essence of our backwardness  because of religion, ethnicity and selfish interests while non of our religions permits such acts,” he said.

Sheik Khalid further called on politicians to always put fear of God in discharging the responsibilities impose on them, by providing the necessary infrastructures for their well-being.

The conference had in attendance, members of the political group from the Six geo- political zones to represent the members across the thirty six State of the nation including the Federal Capital Territory  with the aims to proffer solutions on the challenges beddevlling the country’s political system.
