The People’s Republic of China has reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructure development and economic growth in an effort to strengthen ties.
China’s Director-General of Department of African Affairs, Wu Peng, made the pledge when he led a high-level Chinese delegation to meet with the Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja, the Nigerian Capital.
The visit he said, was to prepare ground for a potential ministerial and presidential visit later this year.
Peng made particular reference to battery-related minerals, a sector where Nigeria holds rich potential.
He added that job creation and local economic empowerment were key themes that suggests a shift towards deeper economic integration.
China lauded its existing involvement in major Nigerian projects, emphasising its recent loan to the railway project.
The Chinese delegation also pledged to support Nigeria’s aspirations on the global stage, especially on the country’s quest for increased African representation in the United Nations Security Council.
This, Peng said, aligns with China’s broader position in advocating for a more equitable international order.
He also expressed great confidence in Nigeria’s economic future, seeing the 21st century as Africa’s time to shine.
The Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maitama Tuggar noted that infrastructure is a cornerstone of President Bola Tinubu’s development agenda.
