Group Seeks End to Discrimination Against Hijab Wearing

A Coalition of Muslim Women Associations in Kwara State North Central Nigeria has called for an end to discrimination against women who wear Hijab.

The Muslim women made the call as they distribute hijabs to Secondary Schools in the state, as part of the activities marking this year’s Hijab Day.

The Amirah of the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Kwara State chapter, Hajia Nimat Labaika described wearing hijab as a fulfillment of the commandment of Allah.

According to her, “wearing hijab upholds the dignity of Muslim women and portrays them as conscious and morally upright Muslims. It is not for fun but a fulfillment of the commandment of Allah.”

She said the celebration was to remind Muslim students of their responsibilities to always wear hijabs.

The FOMWAN Amirah enjoined the students to be proud of wearing hijab as it portrays them as the good ambassadors of Islam.

In her lecture during the event, the Secretary of Al-Muminat Organisation, Hajia Muslimat AbdulRazaq said wearing hijab was part of the total submission to the commandment of Allah.

Hajia AbdulRazaq enjoined female Muslim to wear hijab because of Allah, to earn the expected reward stressing that students should not limit wearing hijab to school environment alone but also at home.

She advised the students to let the purpose of wearing hijab reflect in their day-to-day activities.

“You should face your studies and avoid acts that can jeopardize your future dreams. Avoid keeping bad company or friends that can mislead you,” she advised them

Some of the schools visited to mark the day includes; Government Girls’ Day Secondary School, Ipata Oloje, Barakat Community Secondary School, Ilorin and Anifowose Community Secondary School.

Some of the muslim groups include FOMWAN, Ansar-ud Deen Women Wing, Al Mu’munaat, Standard Bearers, Badrudeen, Al Harakar, The Criterion, and Virtuous Muslimah Forum, among others.

The theme of the 2024 World Hijab Day is entitled; “Veiled in Strength.” It is observed on February 1 to honour Muslim women who wear the hijab.
