The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has declared the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, winner of the just concluded bye-election in Obanliku local government area, Cross River State, Southern Nigeria.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Cross River State, Dr Gabriel Yomere, who was represented by Dr Blessing Anyalebechi declared the result of the bye-election held at 2 polling units in Obanliku local government area.
The results from the two polling units, Bebuenkanyang and Bayaga in Bisu ward indicated that the PDP State House of Assembly candidate, Mr Pius Ashakia polled 275 votes to defeat his opponent of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Sunday Achunekang, who scored 243 votes.
In her remarks, the representative of the REC, Dr Anyalebechi stated that the results of the two polling units were not on the commission’s server to begin with, a situation which warranted the bye-election in the 2 polling units.
Anyalebechi further stated that the ideal step taken to ensure a conclusive election result for Obanliku State Constituency was to merge the results obtained during the 2023 general election to that of the just concluded bye-election.
“By the relevant sections of the law and the Electoral Act, I Dr. Blessing Anyalebechi having certified this result, I declare that the candidates for the All Progressives Congress, Sunday Achunekang scored 10,437 votes and Pius Ashakia of the Peoples Democratic Party got 10,587 votes.
“That Pius Ashakia of PDP having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared winner and is returned elected this day February 3, 2024,” she stated.
Meanwhile, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Emil Inyang has been declared winner of the Akamkpa-Biase federal constituency election.
Inyang polled 15,930 votes to unseat Augustine Aidam of the Peoples Democratic Party, who scored 12,417 votes. Sequal to the results from the Yala 2 State Constituency bye-election, INEC declared Idaga Achadu of the PDP winner.
Achadu scored a total of 9,168 votes against the APC’s Cynthia Nkasi, who got a total of 8,647 votes.
