INEC Declares APC Winner Of Guma 1 Benue State Constituency Bye Election

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Guma 1 State Constituency in Benue State North Central Nigeria, Mr Peter Iche has won the bye-election held on Saturday, February 3rd 2024.

The Returning Officer in charge of the bye-election, Professor Julius Ikya of Joseph Tarka University, Makurdi, who announced the result said Uche polled a total of 5,289 votes to defeat his closest rival and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Mr. Geoffrey Jimin who got 4,134.

In other results released, the candidate of the Labour Party scored 2,833 votes, while that of APGA garnered 121 votes with ADC scoring 72 votes.

Professor Julius Ikya consequently declared Terwase Peter Uche of the APC as the winner of the bye-elections for Guma 1 State Constituency having scored the highest number of votes in the February 3rd bye Elections.

Reacting to the outcome of the bye-election, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Benue State, Professor Sam Egwu, told Journalists that all the steps needed in the process were followed for a hitch-free poll.

We complied with all the processes and voting went on peacefully. We deployed about 230 NYSC Corps members as ad-hoc staff for Guma 1 State Constituency by-election. The logistics were carefully handled including the movement of sensitive and non-sensitive materials”.

Professor Sam Egwu said the Commission did not receive any complaint about irregularities in the exercise even as he attributed the average turnout to the consequence of mobilization on the path of political parties.

On his part, the newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Benue State, CP Emmanuel Adesina described the exercise as seamless and peaceful.

The election was peaceful. We assured the electorates yesterday that there was no cause for alarm and I’m happy they cooperated very well. We did not record any case of violence or breakdown of law and order”.
