The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde says he will extend the payment of wage award to workers and pensioners in the state by another six months.
Governor Makinde also addressed claims that State Governors on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, are not paying salaries to workers and pensions to retirees in the state, as false information.
The Governor had, on October 6th, 2023, approved the payment of a six-month N25,000 wage award for workers and N15,000 for pensioners in the state, to terminate in March, 2024.
Makinde said since assumption of office, he has not failed to pay salaries to workers and pension to retirees on or before 25th of every month, apart from the payment of 13th month salary every year.
Governor Makinde said; “I will keep working to take the people to their rightful destination rather than join words with people playing politics with the current economic situation in the country, and attempting to incite the people against state governors by saying that federal allocation has been increased.”
He explained that extending the payment of wage award to workers and pensioners in the state by another six months is to allow for proper negotiation on new minimum wage, noting that the PDP governors will draw up an action plan to move the nation further in the coming days, as making Nigeria great is a collective responsibility.
He made the remarks in a speech during the commissioning of the dualised 12.5km Challenge-Odo Ona Elewe-Elebu-Apata Road, on Friday.
Governor Makinde renamed the newly commissioned road Theophilus Akinyele Road, Ibadan. The road is a major by-pass project that will not only reduce travel time but also help decongest traffic around Challenge and Apata areas, as well as assist some commuters to connect to Lagos and Ogun states without passing through the major city road.
The Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, joined Governor Makinde in the road commissioning, at an event which has in attendance top government functionaries, traditional rulers, religious leaders and various stakeholders.
In his brief remark before commissioning the project, Governor Mbah, who was the special guest at the event, noted that beyond the ceremony of commissioning, the project is indeed a testament to a legacy of humanity.
He commended Governor Makinde for always thinking about the people.
The Enugu State Governor equally emphasised that reliance on federal allocation for economic growth is not sustainable, urging state governors to look inward for alternative financing models to impact on the lives of the people.
The Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Professor Daud Sangodoyin, said that within the eight months of his second term, Governor Makinde had already commissioned 76.25 km road project, making a total of 220.62 km road project executed by the Makinde-led administration.
