The Cross River State Police Command in 2023, raised the bar for law enforcement, recovering firearms, explosives, and live ammunition.

The Police Commissioner, Mr. Gyogon Grimah, attributed the command’s successes in the previous year to the commitment and resilience of the officers and men.
He was speaking at a press conference in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State in southern Nigeria.
Grimah also attributed the achievements recorded to the synergy between the police command and other security agencies in Cross River as well as the support of the state government.

He said; “Pragmatic law enforcement drills and constant raids of identified criminal hideouts, creeks, blacks spots, as well as flash points through visibility policing, intelligence led-policing and coordinated operations by Tactical Commanders in synergy with other security agencies within the State, the command has drastically reduced crimes and criminality to the barest minimum.”

According to the Police Commissioner, the fact that Cross River State is located within the Niger Delta region and a window for transborder movement, it is essential for the public and other stakeholders to collaborate with the command to entrench peace and security in the state.

Grimah stated that “the command within the period under review, 1st January to 31st December, 2023 recorded a total of Five Hundred and Twenty One (521) incidents. The command recovered 133 firearms, 900 live ammunitions, 594 live cartridges and rescued 58 persons. We (police) also recovered 52 vehicles, 18 explosive devices, 15 explosives indicators, 11 explosives remotes and 10 explosives batteries amongst others.”

He further disclosed that within the period under review, the command lost 5 policemen in the line of duty, while 16 sustained various degrees of injuries.

Grimah said; “a total of 273 cases were charged to court. 41 of those have been prosecuted conclusively and secured 36 convictions, 3 cases were discharged, while 229 are pending. Out of those pending, 103 cases have been transmitted to DPP, while 126 are still pending.”

Crime prevention

Grimah said that the command was taking drastic measures towards crime prevention in accordance with the vision of the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun.

He said; “In keeping with the vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun to stem the tide of crime and make Nigeria safer and more secured for economic growth, the Command under my watch is taking drastic measures in fighting crimes and the perpetrators.”

All our efforts and energies shall be geared towards the prevention of crimes and the successful apprehension of offenders. Consequently, the command has overhauled its crime prevention machineries with Community Policing as the pillars of this strategy. We have already set the ball rolling and took proactive measures to stamp out rising crimes in the State through round the clock patrol, constant raids on identified criminal hideouts and black-spots,” Grimah explained.

The Police Commissioner further said; “We have also increased surveillance on foot and vehicular patrols. Conduct regular stop and search, intensified intelligence gathering and above all, held stakeholders engagements to address crimes across different localities.”

He urged residents and citizens of Cross River State to brace up for the task ahead.

Grimah also advised criminal gangs to choose the path of peace, embrace the State Government’s skills acquisition programmes and other profitable legal ventures to be useful members of society as well as contribute their quota towards the development of the State and country.
