Nigeria’s National Assembly has emphasized that leveraging the power of satellite technology holds the key to unlocking the country’s vast development and economic potential.

The Deputy Speaker, National House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, stated this at the official launch of the Nigerian Communication Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) Accelerator Programme with the theme, “Fostering Innovation in Satellite Technology,” organised by the agency in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The 24-week comprehensive programme is an initiative aimed at fostering innovation, providing mentorship, and propelling space-tech startups into the global spotlight.

Kalu, who was represented by a member of the house, Hon. Cliff Ogbede said satellite technology can provide long-term solutions through innovations to the challenges Nigeria is facing.

He said the launch of the programme signifies a giant step for Nigeria’s technological advancement and economic diversification.

He affirmed that the success of this programme will not only benefit Nigeria but also serve as a model for other African nations aspiring to harness the power of satellite technology.

According to Mr. Kalu, this initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting indigenous capacity building.

“By nurturing promising talents and providing them with the necessary resources and mentorship, NIGCOMSAT is planting the seeds for a robust satellite ecosystem in Nigeria.

“We stand at the precipice of unlocking the immense potential of satellite technology, not just for communication and connectivity, but for a multitude of applications impacting every facet of our lives,” Kalu stressed.

He encouraged the participants to explore the potential of satellite technology to provide solutions in various sectors of the economy as well as health, security, among others, adding that “your journey holds the potential to transform our nation and inspire future generations. May your innovations illuminate the path toward a brighter and a more connected future for all.” 

The Deputy Speaker also admonished them to explore the diverse range of applications satellite technology can offer; prioritize collaboration; employ efficient technology transfer, and cultivate inclusivity.

He gave the assurance that the House of Representatives recognised the strategic importance of the initiative and pledged its support.

Earlier, the Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT Ltd., Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, said the event marks the beginning of a new chapter in the story of satellite technology innovation in Nigeria and beyond.

She noted that the agency, in recognition of the transformative potential of the nation’s space and satellite-related support established with the Accelerator programme.

“The programme is to position NIGCOMSAT Ltd as a key player in fostering innovation in the satellite industry. It will equally open and identify potential collaborators with emerging start-ups as well as gain positive exposure through successful startups.” She explained.

She added that the participants will have a market-fit product, and a NIGCOMSAT stamp, giving them access to the national and global markets in which NIGCOMSAT is involved.

Similarly, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information Communication Technology (ICT), and Cyber Security, Stanley Olajide, underscored the importance of satellite technology in  securing lives and properties, solving health challenges and agricultural challenges, as well as boosting food security.

He also encouraged government agencies to invest in homegrown solutions and indigenous companies to reduce capital flight.

The pioneer Director of Research Development, Dr. Collins Agu who moderated a panel section, urged Nigcomsat and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to collaborate to use satellite technology with drones to solve Nigeria’s insecurity challenges. 20 finalists emerged from the over 450 applications that were received for the programme.

The programme is an initiative designed to propel space-tech startups to the forefront of innovation and success. It serves as a dynamic launch pad for entrepreneurs and visionaries in the space-tech industry. It is strategically crafted to provide startups with global market penetration, tools, resources, mentorships, and support needed to turn visionary ideas into successes.

The programme is targeted at space tech, health tech, Agric-tech, fintech, and cybersecurity. The objectives of the programme include; fostering innovation in the Nigerian space-tech industry. To grant market access to participating startups. To amplify reach and awareness for NIGCOMSAT. To grant market access to participating startups.
