Climate Action: A Panacea For A Rubust Economy

The Director General, Nigerian Country Office, African Development Bank, AfDB, Mr. Lamin Barrow says Nigeria’s energy transition plan will set a framework for the attainment of emission deduction that will drive the galvanization of the country’s economic sector.
Speaking at NatureNews 3rd Anniversary Lecture and Presentation of HEAD Awards with the theme: “Climate Change and Energy Transition in Nigeria,” Mr. Barrow said adopting renewable energy sources will greatly impact about 60% of Nigeria’s emission.
Addressing the question “How can Nigeria policies and investment into renewable energy space to achieve rapid economic growth while meeting the global climate goals, Mr Barrow said in ensuring a just energy transition, Nigeria requires youth financing outlets to transition away from fossil fuels to more sustainable energy generation sources. This also requires youth capital outlets, financial innovation and strong social prevention systems”.
Mr. Barrow called on Nigeria’s government to take advantage of international partnerships and expand access to new and innovative sources of financing.
Nigeria can step up its collaboration with the multilateral development banks to support access to financing including climate funds and support for projects in ways that leverage private sector participation” he said.
The Director General, AfDB added that delivering the goals of the Paris Agreement will involve structural changes that alters the nexus between the environment, the economy and the people.
The the Emir of Dutse Alh. Hamim Nuhu Sanusi represented by Barden Dutse, Alhaji Hamza Ibrahim said renewable energies have important roles in the mitigation of climate change.
He therefore call-on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take urgent steps to resolve all legal and financing issues with regards to Mambilla Hydro Power Station so that the project can proceed.
This he said will add 3000 MW to the National Grid which at the moment transmits 5,000 MW of power in the country.
