Kano State Governor in North West Nigeria Abba Kabir Yusuf has advised newly sworn in 13 Judges to discharge their undertakings with caution by remembering the significance of the Oath of office.
The Governor dropped the advice at the swearing-in of nine New High Court judges and four Khadis of Sharia Court Appeal at the Government House in Kano.
Among the 9 High Court judges, 5 are female while 4 are males.
The Governor while reminding them of the enormous judicial responsibility before them, said, they have shouldered an immense burden and the impact of their judgments stretches far and wide.
He informed the new judges that, their new assignment is a duty that demands legal expertise understanding, and commitment to preserving fundamental principles of the legal system.
“The responsibility you carry is immense, and the impact of your Judgments stretched far and wide. It is a responsibility that demands not only legal expertise but also profound understanding, sympathy, and a commitment, to preserving the fundamental principles
upon which our legal system is built.”
Governor Yusuf stressed the need to have a conducive atmosphere for the judiciary to operate.
To do so, the Governor said, the government since inception has ensured infrastructural provisions and welfare needs to ease the performance of duties and responsibilities of our judicial officers.
He said, “It is essential that we create an enabling environment for our Judiciary and the legal system which must be a creation of hope, by ensuring that Justice is not a privilege reserved for the few, but a right accessible to all.”
“This has to do with our firm commitment to the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary.” Governor Abba explained.
He urged them to embrace the principles of fairness equity, impartiality and fear of God in discharging their responsibilities.
“The entire letters and words of the Oath you have just taken, must reside in a prime place of your heart and be generously applied in your adjudications.
This is a bond that you should engrave in your heart and should be well guided by it while adjudicating in all matters that come before you.”
Governor Yusuf told the new judges that, society is constantly evolving with complex legal challenges adding that the cases they will preside over will present difficult decisions that impact the lives of many people.
“Your role is not just to interpret laws but also to shape the legal landscape, by ensuring that it reflects the values and aspirations of our society.
Remember the law is not static, it must adapt to the changing needs and ambitions of our people.”
“I urge all of you to approach your new roles with humility, empathy and a commitment to service.”
The Nine new High Court judges are Justice Fatima Adamu, Justice Hauwa Lawan, Justice Musa Ahmed, Justice Musa Mohammed Daihuru, Justice Farida Danbaffa, Justice Halima Nasir, Justice Aisha Mahmud, Justice Adamu Abdullahi and Justice Hanif Yusuf.
Meanwhile, the Four Grand Khadis of Sharia Courts are, Khadi Mohammed Kademi, Khadi Salisu Isah, Khadi Isah Idris Sa’ed, and Khadi Ali Mohammed Kani.
