Association marks International Women’s Day in Abuja

The Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) led by the President, Mrs. Maria Lagbaja in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day Celebration organised an Awareness Walk and Symposium for members in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital.

The Awareness Walk and Symposium which had as its theme: “Inspire Inclusion” took place at the Army Headquarters Command Officers Mess, Asokoro Abuja.

Addressing members after the Awareness Walk, the NAOWA President, Mrs. Mariya Lagbaja described the International Women’s Day as a global movement which recognizes the crucial rule women play in developing the society, highlighting the need to address gender gaps.

The Day according to Mrs. Mariya Lagbaja also gives an opportunity for society to work towards creating a world where women have equal opportunities in all aspects of life as the global community comes together to mark the Day.

“The Day also serve as a platform to raise awareness about affecting women globally and some of the issues including gender based violence, discrimination, child marriage and the challenges faced in getting quality education, healthcare and economic opportunities among others”

“A day sets apart to celebrate the social economy, cultural and political achievements of women worldwide as well as to raise awareness about the issues of gender equality. The day equally emphasises the importance of empowering women by supporting initiatives that promotes women’s rights, provide equal opportunities and promote an environment where women can thrive personally and professionally” stated NAOWA President.

The NAOWA further stated that the Global Campaign team for this year’s International Women’s Day, is a call to action and highlights the need to bridge a gap in creating more profits and empowerment for women.

She stressed that it is important to create an environment where women are empowered to take up greater responsibilities beyond their traditional or cultural rules determined by the society. She descried lack of inclusion as a major challenge which prevents many women from reaching their potential goals.

The Special Guest of Honour at the event, the President Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Ogogo Musa Pays tribute to the countless women who have paved the way for progress, broken barriers and challenged societal norms to create a more inclusive world.

“The world has celebrated women trail blazers from the field of science, politics, business, and the arts and to unsung heroes who silently advocate for justice and equality in their community. Also women who have been at the forefront of positive change, driving innovation and inspiring better loving conditoons un our societu for they generation ti come” stated Mrs. Ogogo Musa.

The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja in a Goodwill message on the occastion of the International Women’s Day acknowledged women in tje military who have stood to defy operations, repressive cultural practices and unfair treatment of the female gender.

He saluted the courage and the resilience of the officers and soldiers who keep the home front during long deployment to secure the nation and national interest while appreciating the sacrifices of those in the frontlines.

This NAOWA 2024 international Women’s Day program was organised to raise awareness and support various initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality and women empowerment for a more inclusive society.

It provided a platform for open dialogue where women learnt from experts who addressed questions related to gender equality and empowerment for women and feature presentations on lifestyle, personal development among others.
