An Interministerial Committee has been established to oversee the commemoration of Nigeria’s independence as an autonomous state 64 years ago.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume inaugurated the Committee in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital saying that this year’s Independence Day Celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of the founding fathers as a nation.

George Akume noted that the sacrifices the heroes and heroines made to achieve independence for the great nation from the clutches of colonialism cannot be over-emphasised.

According to him, all the achievements recorded as a nation from independence to date are built on the foundation laid by the nationalists emphasising that marking the  Day to remember them is therefore not out of place.

He emphasised that an event like this also allows the government to showcase the achievements recorded within the short period in office to reposition Nigeria through reform initiatives despite the daunting myriads of socio-economic challenges confronting the nation.

” The Terms of Reference for the Inter-Ministerial Committee include:-

i. Plan, organize, and execute all approved activities befitting the Independence Day Celebration on October 1st, 2024

ii. Co-opt any organization(s)/ person(s) relevant towards the successful execution of the programme

iii. Document for posterity, all planned activities for the Anniversary; and

iv. Carry out any other assignment as may be required towards the successful implementation of the Celebration.”

The SGF, however, noted that this year’s Independence Celebration activities are going to be low-key.

“Juma’at Service, Friday, 27th September 2024; Church Service Sunday, 29th September 2024; Presidential Broadcast, Tuesday, 1st October 2024; and 64th Independence Day Parade, Tuesday, 1st October 2024;” he explained

The Terms of Reference of each Sub-Committee and list of members would be sent by the Secretariat while Sub-Committee Secretaries would present their budgets for consideration and approval as soon as possible.
