Oyo State Urge Residents To Complement Efforts Towards Clean Environment 

Oyo state government has called on all residents of the state to complement its efforts at ensuring a safe and clean environment.

The state governor, Mr Seyi Makinde, made the call in Ibadan, during an event to mark the 2024 World Clean-up Day.

The event, tagged, “Make Room for Life”, was organized by the state Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Bayo Lawal, urged residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal.

He noted that the abuse of the environment through human activities was on the increase with its attendant consequences on the collective well-being of everyone.

He implored the public to abide by the environmental laws and patronise the waste contractors assigned to their communities instead of engaging in indiscriminate waste disposal.

Makinde said his administration had been proactive in tackling issues related to climate change by promoting the use of renewable energy and encouraging tree-planting campaigns across the state.

He told the public that the Rule of Law Enforcement Agency (RLEA), recently established to bring defaulters to justice, had been equipped to perform effectively.

In his welcome address, the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Alhaji Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, described the 2024 theme as appropriate.

“This is at a time when the planet is challenged by climate change occasioned by reckless burning of fossil fuel, improper waste management techniques, forest degradation and deforestation among others,” he said.

The commissioner said the event was meant to clean up the mindset of the people by replacing indifference with compassion, wastefulness with efficiency and neglect with stewardship.

“It is also an opportunity to sensitize the people to clean up their environment,” he said.

He said the state government, through his ministry, had intensified efforts to implement strategies and policies to promote effective waste management, recycling, environmental education, and sustainable development.
