Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for reflection, celebration, and renewed hope as the nation embarks on its journey marked by resilience, strength, and an unyielding spirit in the face of numerous challenges.
During a press conference held by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Idris emphasised the collective responsibility of every Nigerian in achieving the desired future for the country. He urged citizens to strive for peace, unity, and stability, declaring that together they can build a nation to be proud of.
“Since gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria has evolved from a nation of hope and potential into a leading force on the African continent and a respected voice globally. Despite facing political upheavals and economic challenges, we have emerged stronger through our shared vision of a united and prosperous country,” he remarked.
Idris highlighted the government’s efforts to revive Nigeria’s economy, crediting President Tinubu’s leadership for initiating transformative policies aimed at correcting past missteps and repositioning Nigeria as an economic superpower. He acknowledged the transitional pains accompanying some reforms but reiterated the administration’s focus on returning the country to sustainable growth.
The Minister pointed out that a significant setback to rural socio-economic development has been the lack of direct fiscal control by elected Local Government Administrations. To address this, he noted that President Tinubu is seeking a Supreme Court verdict to implement local government autonomy, demonstrating a commitment to restructuring governance and enhancing grassroots development.
Additionally, the recent ratification of the National Values Charter by the Federal Executive Council was discussed, with Idris stating that its implementation aligns with the President’s vision for moral and cultural reawakening in the country. He asserted that the shared sense of nationhood and obligations will always outweigh divisive sentiments.
In response to journalists, Nigeria’s Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, outlined the ministry’s mandate to develop policies ensuring effective access to water and sanitation. He emphasised the importance of food security, detailing initiatives like the commissioning of dams and rice irrigation projects in Enugu State.
He also addressed the flooding challenges in Maiduguri, stating that a technical committee has been established to assess all dams in Nigeria and plan necessary rehabilitations and constructions.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, unveiled the programs for the 64th Independence Anniversary during the press conference, which was attended by several ministers, including those of Budget and Economic Planning, Finance, Works, and Education.
