The Nigerian Senate has began the process for the review of the 1999 Constitution with a three day retreat in Kano state, North West of the country.
Speaking at the retreat, the Deputy Senate President who is the Chairman of the constitution Review Committee Senator Jibrin Barau reminded members of the committee of the task before them which is anchored on values that makes Nigeria great.
Senator Jibrin said, freedom, equality, and justice are enduring ideals that guides the functions of Senate Constitution Review.
“This is an assignment for us to work in synergy with our colleagues (from the House of Representatives, Governors, State Assemblies, the judiciary, and civil society organisations) and other stakeholders to produce an outstanding report and recommendations, which, of course, will be composed of suggestions and recommendations to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for further deliberation and approval.”
He said, the decisions taken today by the review committee will have far-reaching implications for generations to come, urging the committee members to ensure that, they serve in the best interests of all Nigerians.
“Together, we can forge a more robust and inclusive constitutional framework for our beloved nation, Nigeria, as we seek to build a brighter future for all our citizens.”
The former Senate President Ahmed Lawan stressed the need for propper consideration of women and the Traditional Institution to play advisory role in the constitution.
He also advocated for local governments be granted full autonomy in the constitution as doing so will greatly impact the lives of the rural communities.
The Deputy Speaker House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu represented by the majority leader Julius Ihonvbere said, the retreat will provide the right direction for a better Nigeria.
Also speaking, the chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Adebo Ogundoyin appreciate the recognition and involvement of the State Houses of Assembly in the constitution Review process.
“Your collaboration speaks volumes of the Committee’s commitment to ensuring that the Constitution reflects the true needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people. Your sincerity and dedication to driving meaningful constitutional amendments are evident, and we stand ready to work alongside you to achieve these goals.”
He called for a timely submission of recommendations to allow us the sub-national level to effectively fulfill their responsibilities.
“We recall the challenges posed by electioneering activities during the 2023 general elections, which nearly hampered the last constitutional alteration. We are determined to avoid a recurrence, and an early start will be key to ensuring a smooth and efficient process,” he said.
