The Head of the Department of Forensic Sciences at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Awka, Dr Chijioke Ofomata, a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (FPSN), recently advocated for the implementation of forensic science training for police personnel to bolster their capacity development.

During an official visit to the Anambra Police Command Headquarters, Dr Ofomata, accompanied by Dr Ernest Orji, a Forensic Toxicologist, and Mr Charles Ibeh, a Digital Forensic professional, urged police officers to enrol in the Masters in Forensic Sciences (MFS) program offered by the University.

The program covers seven core forensic specialty areas including Forensic Pharmacy, Forensic Toxicology, DNA Forensics, Digital/Cyber Forensics, Forensic Legal Medicine, Forensic Criminal Justice, and Forensic Chemistry.

Emphasizing the importance of the training, Dr Ofomata highlighted that it would equip officers with the skills to be observant, methodical, and detail-oriented.

They would also gain proficiency in using technological, digital enablers, and scientific methods, as well as essential digital forensic and other modern tools, which are globally acceptable, thus enhancing police investigations.

The HOD noted that NAU initiated the Masters in Forensic Sciences (MFS) program in 2015, with the Bachelor in Forensic Sciences (BSC) Program commencing in 2023. The Forensic Sciences Department is domiciled within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Agulu Campus of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

In response to this call for capacity development, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, encouraged officers under his command to pursue self-development opportunities in Forensic Sciences, to enhance their policing efficiency.

He highlighted the importance of continuous retraining to expose officers to modern policing strategies and equip them with the necessary forensic skills for crime prevention, detection, and overall capacity enhancement.

Additionally, CP Itam emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Forensic Sciences Department to provide officers with the required skills to enhance their investigative capabilities and overall competencies.

Both parties agreed to engage in collaborative research activities and programs that would contribute substantial value to the Police Force, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, and society at large.
